The Uganda U-17 national team, fondly known as the Cubs, have written a historic new chapter in Ugandan football by qualifying for the FIFA U-17 World Cup for the first time ever. The milestone was sealed with a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over The Gambia in a high-stakes playoff on Saturday at Stade El Abdi in El Jadida, Morocco.
The match, part of the expanded qualification process for the 2025 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, offered Africa’s additional World Cup slots to third-placed teams. Uganda, finishing third in Group A, faced off against Gambia, third in Group C, in a tense, winner-takes-all clash.
The game exploded into action from the very first minute, as Gambia’s Ahmed Njundu Kanyi stunned the Ugandan side with an early goal. But the Cubs showed maturity beyond their years, rallying back with purpose and poise.
Uganda’s hero of the night was forward James Bogere, who turned the match on its head with two expertly taken goals in the 13th and 33rd minutes. His brace not only erased the deficit but also showcased the attacking potential that has defined Uganda’s campaign.
In the second half, the Cubs came under intense pressure, but head coach Brian Ssenyondo’s side stood tall. Their defensive organization and composure underlined a performance filled with grit, passion, and growing tactical maturity.
The final whistle sparked celebrations as Uganda claimed one of Africa’s final tickets to the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar—marking the country’s first-ever appearance at any FIFA World Cup tournament, across all age groups.
This groundbreaking achievement reflects the steady progress of youth football in Uganda. It stands as a proud moment for the nation, igniting dreams for the next generation and elevating Uganda’s standing on the global football stage.
