Man Utd Eye Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen as Onana Replacement Amid Summer Overhaul
Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a summer move for Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, as doubts continue to grow over Andre Onana’s long-term future at Old Trafford.
Onana, who joined United from Ajax in the summer of 2023, has endured a turbulent debut season in the Premier League. His performances have been riddled with high-profile errors, leading to fierce criticism from pundits — including claims by a former player branding him as “one of the worst” goalkeepers in the club’s history.
New manager Ruben Amorim is understood to be assessing his options between the sticks and, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, has identified 22-year-old Verbruggen as a potential replacement. The report states that United have already made contact with Brighton to explore the Dutch international’s availability.
However, securing Verbruggen’s signature may not be straightforward. Bayern Munich are also said to be monitoring the talented shot-stopper, with The Telegraph reporting the Bundesliga giants are considering a bid in the region of £60 million.
Verbruggen has featured in 33 matches across all competitions for Brighton this season, keeping eight clean sheets. Despite his growing reputation, statistical comparisons reveal he currently has a lower save percentage than Onana and has committed more errors leading to goals.
Nevertheless, his influence at Brighton has been significant. After missing the first two league games of the campaign, Verbruggen has established himself as the club’s first-choice keeper and played a pivotal role in their push for European qualification. Brighton currently sit ninth in the Premier League, six points off a Europa League spot.
Speaking to the BBC about his rise, Verbruggen said:
“I’m loving it. Everybody wants to play every game — same goes for me. I really love to play and develop, and help the team. We have a very strong squad… I’m really happy to be part of it, and great things are coming.”
According to Sun Sport, United are also keeping tabs on two other goalkeeping options, with reports suggesting Onana could be the subject of interest from Saudi Arabian clubs this summer.
As the season nears its conclusion, Brighton prepare to host Leicester on Saturday, while Manchester United travel to St. James’ Park for a crucial clash against Newcastle on Sunday
